Building the future of lab medicine: Labcorp and Raritan Valley Community College launch workforce development partnership

08 Sep 2025

To help develop the innovative healthcare leaders of the future, Labcorp and Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) have launched an academic pathway designed to train the next generation of highly skilled medical laboratory technicians. This public-private collaboration is designed to support the growing demand for qualified lab professionals across the healthcare ecosystem.

Unveiled in 2023, the partnership celebrates the creation of RVCC’s Associate of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology. The program blends academic rigor with hands-on clinical experience, preparing students to meet the evolving needs of modern healthcare systems.

Labcorp is proud to partner with RVCC to support their Medical Laboratory Technology program. Students will train alongside our expert lab professionals during clinical rotations and, upon completion, have the opportunity to join our team of over 800 lab personnel at our Raritan facility.

With startup costs supported by an initial investment from Labcorp, the program strives to make participants workforce-ready, beginning with academic coursework at RVCC’s Branchburg campus before transitioning to clinical rotations at Labcorp’s laboratory in Raritan, NJ.

This workforce development initiative has already made a meaningful impact in a short period. All participants from both iterations of Labcorp’s workforce development program graduated. 60% of the first cohort and 50% of the second have transitioned into full-time roles at Labcorp’s Raritan laboratory. These results reflect the strength of the initiative and the dedication of its participants, mentors and partners in building pathways to rewarding careers in science.

Looking to the future, current program director, Elise Wagner, Ph.D., vice president of laboratory operations at Labcorp, notes,

Laboratory results are essential to physician decision making and patient care. Through our partnership with RVCC, we have created opportunities for students in Somerset County to pursue a career in healthcare and the opportunity to touch millions of lives. We are proud of the students who have already completed the program and look forward being part of that career journey for those students yet to come.

This partnership offers a replicable model for addressing talent shortages in laboratory medicine, an area critical to diagnostics, patient care and operational efficiency. By investing in education and clinical training, Labcorp and RVCC are not only building careers—they’re strengthening the backbone of healthcare delivery.
