Dr. Megan Shaffer completed her PhD in microbiology and immunology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Shreveport, and continued post-doctoral training at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans. Dr. Shaffer holds a certificate of qualification from the New York State Department of Health to act as a laboratory director in the categories of histocompatibility, transplant monitoring, immunohematology (limited to ABO-Rh blood typing by NGS), genetic testing (limited to molecular), forensic identity and parentage/identity testing. She is board certified as an associate of the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI). She also served as the 2022-23 Chair of the Relationship Testing Standards Committee of the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) and is a member of the 2025 College of American Pathologists Histocompatibility and Identity Testing Committee. Before joining Labcorp, Dr. Shaffer worked in the field of forensic DNA testing in several positions, including laboratory director and technical leader. Since that time, Dr. Shaffer’s training and experience have expanded into the field of HLA, and she is a current member of the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) and AABB. Dr. Shaffer utilizes multiple technologies to perform HLA testing, including NGS, SSO, Sanger SBT, engraftment monitoring and antibody analysis.
