Mycoplasma genitalium: An Emerging Health Concern

19 May 2025

Mycoplasma genitalium (MG, Mgen) is an emerging sexually transmitted pathogen that was first identified in 1981 in two urethral specimens obtained from men with non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU).1 While the prevalence of M. genitalium in men presenting with persistent or recurrent urethritis is ~30- 40%,2 women are also at risk for symptomatic infection and adverse outcomes after infection with this pathogen.3 In women, M. genitalium can cause cervicitis, vaginitis, endometritis and causes increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), preterm birth and infertility.3 M. genitalium can be acquired through unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse.4
